Friendly, accessible, community-based and engaging – that is what our adult learning work is all about.
Our adult learning speciality is providing free “pop-up” courses in locations across Surrey encouraging people who didn’t get on in school or have been out of education for a long time, to take up learning again.
Learning can be transformative for people wanting to make a fresh start after a crisis in their lives, such as unemployment, illness, crime or family breakdown. We provide first-steps learning courses in topics including first aid, DIY, cooking and budgeting.
One of our recent adult learning projects has been helping to foster good relations between the military and civilian communities, close to the Army Training Camp at Pirbright.
Thanks to funding from the Armed Forces Community Covenant, 119 individuals from both military and civilian communities took part in courses including practical learning such as first aid and confidence building as well as fun art and craft sessions.
This was the second project funded by the Armed Forces Community Covenant and it enabled us to build further on previous achievements, extending networking, generating new contacts & increasing the awareness of opportunities for community engagement in the local area.
In feedback, participants told us they went away with new found friends, improved confidence and tools to build on their own personal development. They all felt a sense of support, gained from the others in the group. The majority said they were better placed to consider further training courses or other community opportunities.
