Surrey Care Trust Patron, Sir Richard Stilgoe OBE DL entertained and delighted guests at the Trust’s charity dinner last week which took place in the unique surounds of the Watts Gallery in Compton.
Dame Penelope Keith joined diners who soaked up the atmospheric spaces and the collection left by the eminent Victorian artist G F Watts as they enjoyed a sparkling reception and three course meal.
Guests were treated to a wonderful and very spontaneous song from Sir Richard Stilgoe, who invited diners to suggest words and phrases which he then incorporated into the lyrics. These included, among many others, cheese and marmalade sandwiches, the backstop, the Mothers’ Union, pulmonaria and the English rugby team.
Sir Richard also recited a poem he wrote for the Trust in 1998; None of My Business.
All proceeds from the event will support the work of the Trust, which helps people to overcome the disadvantage of low skills, poor educational achievement, limited opportunities and tough financial circumstances.
