Following several years as a secondary school teacher Neil worked as an education officer, eventually becoming Director of Education for the London Borough of Greenwich where he established the new education authority.

From 1993-2006 he was the founding director of the National Literacy Trust.

Neil was an occasional international consultant on establishing national strategies to promote reading and literacy, and whilst at the National Literacy Trust served on a number of Government advisory committees.

He now works as a consultant and personal/organisational development coach and as a volunteer mentor and adviser to a variety of charities; he also contributes to international literacy developments via The Frankfurt Book Fair/ UNESCO Literacy Campaign.

He has been a school governor since the mid-70s and at The Ashcombe School, Dorking since 1993.

He was awarded an OBE for services to education in 2002.
