Working with young people from ethnic minorities

The Surrey Care Trust employs a Personal Advisor, as part of a project funded by Connexions, to support young people from ethnic minorities.

We work with 13 to 19 year-olds in several schools in East Surrey. They have come from all over the world, from countries as diverse as Portugal and Pakistan, China and Brazil, Ghana and Poland.

The problems faced by children whose families have moved to the UK may include poor language skills, discrimination, or simply the fact that their parents are not familiar with our education system and are themselves socially isolated.

We help them to cope at school and to mix confidently in the social networks of their contemporaries and in the wider community. We support each young person with one-to-one advice sessions, as well as group workshops and events.

We work with young people from five schools, Warwick School in Redhill, Oxted School, Warlingham School, De Stafford School in Caterham on the Hill, Oakwood School in Horley.
