The Surrey Care Trust’s FACE family and community education programme works with people who need encouragement and support, as much as training to help them make the journey into learning and work.
Many have low self-esteem, lack confidence, struggle with social skills and hold the view that they are unemployable. Lack of skills may not be their only barrier to getting back to learning and employment: many have health issues or are recovering from drug or alcohol addiction.
FACE’s approach is flexible, offering an intensive individually tailored package of support.
This may be helping people access financial support from other agencies, accompanying them to local colleges, or just calling them to check that everything is OK.
The FACE development workers provide a point of contact which remains in place for as long as necessary, which is important to those participants who are furthest from the job market.
We intentionally opt not to have a central base, preferring to make use of venues such as children’s centres, community centres and church halls. There is no pre-advertised course brochure: courses are created to meet the needs and interests of participants in particular communities.
Back-to-work skills is one of the main areas where we run courses, while other subjects include literacy, healthy living and first aid.
Bridget Newbould, project manager, says this allows FACE to be genuinely responsive.
Delivering on the doorstep of the learners acknowledges the reality that they are unlikely to want to travel outside of their immediate neighbourhood to attend programmes.
