Jess’s story
Jess started attending the Stanwell Sure Start Children’s Centre when she joined the young parents group with her son Harleigh. In summer 2010 she completed a year of Maths and English classes run at the centre by the Surrey Care Trust in partnership with Brooklands College.
“I felt trapped into a life on benefits. I hate the idea of being a sponger. Even before I left school, I had a job and always worked, even after my son was born, until I had to give up because a cut in my hours affected my working tax credit. Going to classes has given me so much more confidence and I feel positive about my future and being able to get a worthwhile job, at least when my son is older.”
