Thank you
The Surrey Care Trust    Celebrating our 30th birthday in 2012

Once a participant joins a FACE course, one of our development workers establishes a relationship which is a combination of being tutor and mentor.

Our workers also provide on-going support, which continues after the initial course has finished, to help people overcome their anxieties and fears until eventually they become more independent.

Taking the time to talk and listen is important – we are helping people who have complex problems. Giving participants a ten-week course and then expecting them to go forward on their own isn’t realistic when working with people who have been out of learning and employment for a long time.

Lynsay Scott: ‘The reason for our success is that we stay with the learner . The project workers do not see themselves as simply having a teaching role, they see themselves as teacher, mentor, advocate, and it is the combination of these roles that works.’

Support is as much about overcoming practical barriers such as childcare and travel as it is about challenging negative attitudes to learning, boosting confidence and self-esteem, and keeping participants motivated. Attitudes as well as skills have to be addressed.

For new learners signing up for a training course can be a daunting step,  especially if they had a poor experience of education in the past, so we offer a relaxed, friendly and informal environment.
