The Surrey Care Trust    Celebrating our 30th birthday in 2012

FACE has built on the Surrey Care Trust’s strong relationship with the Probation service by providing personal development courses in probation centres such as Redhill and Brighton.

Changing attitudes amongst ex-offenders is a significant part of our approach, in the initial course and in on-going mentoring. We support them in developing more realistic and achievable employment goals and in some cases adjusting their career outlook.

Employers are prepared to give ex-offenders a chance, but it could mean starting at a lower skilled position and working up, which takes time.

Having a criminal record does not mean that ex-offenders can’t work, but it may prevent them entering certain jobs, which can be difficult to come to terms with.

Participants are encouraged to request feedback from interviews rather than assuming that the lack of success at interview stage is just because of a criminal record. It may have nothing to do with their past but could simply be because another candidate was more qualified.
